not quite literature, but in a town in Wallonia there is an exhibition dedicated to the phallus, masks, carnival, which in Britain would be closed down by the police the day it opened. Yet in Wallonia, in Binche, there are young kids playing around, making masks, and no one turns a wink. There is an exhibition on, in french, because it is wallonia, crossing genres, with the carnival, masque theme, challenging every idea of fixed sexuality you can imagine.Which simply goes to show how complicated the matter of what is culturally a norm and what is prohibited actually is. Last nite on radio was a rattigan play, and I remember the winslow boy at school, and the silence surrounding rattigan, just to show that things change Do you find this valuable? |
